This is a question often asked and, because there is overlap between the two, the answer is not totally straightforward!
Traditionally, a joinery firm would measure up and construct essential wooden structures for a building in the workshop, and these would then be fitted by an on-site carpenter. Such items might include Box Sash Windows, Staircases and Banisters, Bespoke Doors & Frames, some types of Panelling, Roof Lanterns, Cupboards / Cabinets and Decorative Woodwork.
There is overlap because experienced joiners often have on-site carpentry / installation experience which is invaluable to the overall process since the craftsman then has good knowledge of the full project and not just one element
Joinery also extends to free-standing furniture. Clearly furniture does not need to be installed by a carpenter, but bespoke pieces have to be designed to fit available spaces.
